Valentino Rockstud 100 Patent Black & Red Shoes Review

I can’t believe I’m writing this post for you, but I finally have my beloved Valentino Rockstud heels! You probably already know from numerous wish list posts and Instagram inspiration how much I love the Rockstud, I think it’s actually been for over a year, but I never ended up buying them until November. I was lucky enough to get these gorgeous beauties in the Black Friday sales on FarFetch and I’m over the moon. I was originally going to get the classic nude and black (here) but after seeing how beautiful this patent black and deep red Rockstud combination was, I was hooked! I did also love the deep red and nude pairing (here) as I thought maybe they were less dominant and easier to wear, but each time I looked at the black and red and asked others as well, they said this pair popped the most and looked the most striking, so my mind was made up! They came from a little boutique in Paris within a couple of days.

The Sizing & Fit – I first tried on the Valentino Rockstud when I was in Liberty in London back in April 2015 and I opted to try the 39 (UK 6) in the classic nude and black in nappa leather. They did fit, but the length was a tiny bit short, so ideally I knew that I would be a 39.5 in the regular Rockstuds. When it come to ordering this patent Valentino Rockstud option, I decided to go up half a size and choose the 40 due to the leather being stiffer and thicker, I didn’t think they would be as forgiving and I was right. They fit me absolutely perfectly in size 40 and I couldn’t be happier. As they are slingbacks you can get away with the sizing a bit more, but in reference I’m a 39 in Jimmy Choo and a 40 in Christian Louboutin or Giuseppe Zanotti. So for an Italian brand, I would say that these run quite true to size, or in comparison to American brands, they run smaller.

The Comfort – In terms of the comfort for the Valentino Rockstud, I would say that they aren’t a shoe you can wear around for lots of walking at all, well not for me anyway, I would say they have the same type of comfort level as the Christian Louboutin Pigalle but with a slightly longer and wider toe box so your toes are not squashed together. The height is around 100mm or 4 inches depending on what metric you use, so if you are used to that height on shoes, it shouldn’t be too steep for you at all. I can walk in them just fine without feeling any height pain initially, that just comes after some time like with all heels. I don’t find these shoes as secure as my others though. I know they have an ankle buckle and your feet are strapped in, however due to the slingback style, your foot does come off the sole of the shoe as you walk, so it can make them feel a little wobbly with the thin heel until you get used to it. I imagine the flat Rockstud or the smaller heeled version would be a lot easier to walk in without wobbling.

The Colour & Leather – I’m not usually a huge patent leather fan, as I’m sure you might have noticed from what I usually wear. I don’t generally like the shine that it gives off with the types of clothes that I wear, however I think this deep red and black combination looks absolutely gorgeous in patent leather. Doing this look in a matte version just wouldn’t have the same effect at all and the patent really makes them pop and stand out. I find them to be quite a striking and dominant shoe that is stunning. In terms of the colour, I was hoping it would be a deep burgundy red, but I will say it’s in-between a deep and normal red, much like the colour in my photos here (depending on your screen) but it’s definitely not primary or post box red. It’s the perfect mix with the black and the gold studs just top it off!

The Details & Versatility – In terms of the little details on these Valentino Rockstud shoes, I would say that buckle is quite fiddly and tricky on the patent version since it’s so small and the leather is quite stiff, but that’s the only little detail that can be fiddly. The other details like the gold studs, the placement of them all and how spaced apart they are, the different mixes of the colours of leather together and the overall shape of the shoe are gorgeous. I find these shoes to be simply stunning and everyone else who has seen them absolutely adores them too!

When it comes to wearability, I wanted to show how they work with different types of looks. I was worried that they might not go with feminine and girly outfits or lighter colours since they are dark and bold, but they work really well on a bare leg, even on skin as pale as mine, so I know they will be great with dresses when it’s warmer, but they work equally as well with black leather pants or black jeans, so I’m really happy I have these. They turned out to be more versatile than I originally thought they would be.

Overall Thoughts – So that rounds up my review of the Valentino Rockstud heels in Patent Black and Red Leather and I hope you love them as much as I do! Unfortunately since this colour combination was quite rare, only being available in France, it has now sold out, but they have the most beautiful popping pink version (here) and a gorgeous peach tone (here) which work perfectly for the upcoming Springtime! Otherwise, you can choose your own colours online at Harrods as they have a huge collection. What do you fashion bloggers and readers think of them? I think the little cons I mentioned are heavily outweighed with their beauty. Buy Valentino Rockstud shoes online at:

Wow, such beautiful shoes, Lorna! A sound investment that will last for years to come, especially in those deep colours which will be perfect from season to season. I love this style of shoe, I also like the slightly lower heeled version too but these are just perfect.

Awesome! I was totally waiting for you to write this post! Valentino generally runs half a size smaller than most shoes I find- I always go up half a size. I know I love all my Rockstud shoes, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I think you will! Nice review. Xo
