My 6 Tips For Younger, Healthy Looking Skin
I’ve mentioned before that a common question I get asked quite regularly is always about my age. Nobody believes that I’m 28 when I give my age, which can be quite frustrating at times, but I know in the future it will be a good thing. I’ve always grown up with younger looking skin and facial features as I’ve always come across as younger than I am, which has been more of a hindrance than a good thing so far, but I know that will change in time.
Hardly any of you know this either, but I suffer from acne due to hormonal imbalance and food allergies, so even though I am able to hide those imperfections with make-up and Photoshop, I’m still very lucky that my skin is plump, soft, smooth, and clear around the problem areas. I’ve only developed one line on my forehead and I don’t have any wrinkles anywhere else, so despite having spots/pimples, my skin is, in my opinion, quite nice, thankfully.
I thought it would make sense for me to give you some of my tips that I follow to keep me looking younger for those of you who are interested. I know a lot of it is down to genes and I’m lucky in that department, but it’s also down to how you take care of your body. Your largest organ you have is your skin, and since it’s an organ, it needs a lot of care. For me this combines a mixture of external and internal elements, which count as my whole skincare routine for me. I hope it helps!
Have A Good Face Care Regime
One thing that I can’t stress enough is having a good face regime. It’s amazing how much this effects the outside appearance of your skin. For a while I wasn’t using anything decent and I wondered why my skin was looking dull, dry, and tired, while my pores were really large. I since changed to something that suits me and I haven’t looked back. Investing in good products that suit your skin type, leave your skin hydrated, and plump it up are what you need. They really treat and nourish the skin, making you look fresh, and younger at the same time.
I definitely recommend using an eye-cream too. I didn’t for quite some time, but since I started using one, I have noticed a huge difference. I’m not suggesting any particular skincare to you since everyone has their own preferences, but for me, it’s been about finding something suited to me, especially with natural and gentle elements in it as well. You must moisturise too though, you need a good moisturiser to really hydrate your skin. That’s hugely important and I can’t say that enough.
Another thing you probably might want to invest in sometimes is treatments. You can see what I mean on Nuriss for more information, but in the past I have had light chemical peels (not the ones where you’re red for days) and I’ve also had microdermabrasion treatments too. These have all gone a long way in helping my skin lose any red marks from acne, as well as smooth it out. I can definitely say that face treatments like this have been extremely helpful and not something you should shy away from if you really want to care for your skin. They can be expensive, but for me they were definitely worth it with my scarring.
Drink Lots Of Water
This one is kind of obvious isn’t it? If you don’t drink enough water, your body and your skin suffer with dehydration and it’s not pretty. I did mention this as my number 1 tip in my 5 lazy ways to stay healthy post and I will stand by it forever. I notice a huge difference in the plumpness of my skin and how it feels when comparing days I’ve drank a lot of water, and days that I haven’t. Make sure your water is filtered too as you don’t want to be taking in all that chlorine and those nasty chemicals. I do have one of those Bobble Bottles above and have been using them for over a year now. They filter the water as you drink, so it’s ideal.
But if you have difficulty drinking enough water or absorbing nutrients due to illness, intense physical activity, or excessive sweating, you can take IV hydration therapy in addition to drinking water. Utah IV can offer various benefits for your skin. By replenishing essential vitamins and minerals directly into your system, it can promote skin health, improve its appearance, and enhance its natural glow.
Eat Good Fats And Nutritious Vegetables
In a world full of fast and processed foods, it’s easy to eat meals that aren’t very nutritious and are actually empty calories, so you really need to make sure that you eat your vegetables and good fats. I’m talking about avocado, coconut, nuts, dark green vegetables, carrots, etc. All of these are rich in omega 3 and vitamins which are important to your skin. Without these, not only does your body not get the nutrients it needs, but your skin suffers too. I can tell the difference daily if I haven’t eaten enough vegetables. I can say that carrots are one that affects me straight away. When I eat raw carrots, my skin glows.
Get Lots Of Sleep
Now this one is as obvious as water isn’t it? If you don’t get enough sleep, your skin looks dull and tired. It’s simple. I try to aim for 7-8 hours of sleep a night and it really shows on me if I don’t get that. Not only do dark circles appear under your eyes, but you can get more fine lines and wrinkles this way too. Your skin doesn’t have enough time to rest and heal when you don’t sleep enough, so it’s a huge important part of any beauty routine if you want to stay younger looking and healthy.
Go Outside, But Use Sun Cream
Since I work from home being a full time blogger, it can be so easy to forget to go outside sometimes and live like a hermit because you’re so engrossed in your work. I’ve learned the hard way with this as I recently found out I was vitamin D deficient, so I’m taking supplements. I now make sure that I go outside everyday though, even if it’s just for 20 minutes because your body and skin really need that natural daylight. If you go outside all the time, you must wear a sun cream on your face though as I know sun damage is the number one cause for premature ageing. Definitely don’t leave the house without sun cream on your face! You need to prevent those wrinkles as much as you can to keep you looking younger. Just don’t skip on going outside in general as it’s very important for our bodies.
I Don’t Smoke Or Drink Alcohol
These are rules that I have stuck to my entire life and it works for me. My mum is 50 herself (click here to see her photo) and she has never drank alcohol or smoked in her lifetime and she looks like she’s in her 30’s, so it’s not just me that I have as evidence that it ages you. A lot of people I knew during my school years started smoking and drinking from an early age and whenever I see them around town sometimes, there’s a significance age difference in our appearances (not meant in a rude way or offensively).
I’m not telling anyone what to do at all, but for me, avoiding smoking and avoiding drinking (obviously avoiding drugs too, that’s a no brainer) works at keeping your skin looking young. I know smoking dehydrates your skin a lot and creates wrinkles as well as dullness since it’s depleting your oxygen, so not only are there health benefits to not smoking, there’s appearance benefits too. Most people wont give up drinking entirely obviously, but I’d say moderation is better. Aimee Song from Song of Style, and the fitness model, Anna Nystrom, both don’t drink alcohol or smoke either and they look fantastic. It’s something to think about if you’re worried about ageing. I hope these tips help!

Good post Lorna, so much of this applies to us guys as well. I confess to eating a tiny bit of chips (crisps) this morning – bad!

Ha ha, we all do it now and again, don’t we? It’s only natural!
Great tips – I really notice the difference when I haven’t drunk enough water!

Yeah, it’s amazing how much of a difference it makes!
As a fellow non-smoker and non-drinker of alcohol I have to agree with you that it makes quite a difference. I’ve never smoked in my whole life and I can count the number of times I’ve drunk alcohol on the fingers of one hand – and I’ve never liked it. 😀 I’m always happy when people are surprised to find out that I’m 42. 😀
Author
I know, I never knew you were 42 at all! That age didn’t even cross my mind in the slightest. I would definitely have said early 30s for sure! I’m happy that you find it makes a huge difference to you too. I guess we’re all living proof 😀 Do you ever find it difficult to socialise when you don’t drink? I do because people always think I’m incredibly strange and weird (especially around my age) and I always get frustrated being around drunk people as they act so stupidly lol! 😀
To be honest I’ve never found not drinking alcohol to be an issue as far as socialising goes. All of my family and friends know I don’t drink and anyone else just accepts it without much questioning. 🙂 I’ve never been one for going to pubs or bars anyway so my social activities have never often been in a drinking environment. 🙂
The thing which causes me more difficulties (and many perplexed looks from others) is that I don’t drink tea or coffee either – so it gets awkward if I’m visiting someone’s house for the first time and they offer me a drink only to find that they haven’t actually got anything in their house that I can have other than water. 😀 It seems that not everyone keeps fruit juice and other cold soft drinks in stock. 😉

Ha ha, I know exactly how you feel as I don’t drink coffee or tea either, neither do I drink fizzy soda drinks. So the only thing I ever ask for is water too, or I usually have my filtered bottle with me. I even take that out to restaurants just in case! It is so strange how people look at you when you don’t follow the usual protocol that everyone else does!
I drink fizzy drinks but I mostly have fruit juices. 🙂 I like the taste of coffee in chocolate, cakes, desserts etc – but I don’t like it as a drink. 😀 So strange…
Author
I guess it’s more intense and strong in the actual drink. I don’t actually like the taste of coffee in anything at all, ha ha.
Your tips are all precious, even I always follow them. But I can not always sleep eight hours unfortunately!
kisses. I wish you a good new week!

I think you look stunning and your tips for skin care are really great! Your mother also looks great! I drink lots of water and sleep a lot too (but that’s more due to anaemia 🙂 and I don’t drink alcohol (apart from Christmas, celebrations, one glass if that much) and I don’t smoke. I know that good nourishing is key, but I unfortunately am a fussy eater – I don’t eat meat. Great tips! Hope you have a very nice week!

I think it works for you too, Denise as you look young! I know we spoke about that before, you definitely don’t look your age 🙂
Your skin looks absolutely beautiful! I was just telling another blogger, that I wish I would’ve started looking for a good skincare system when I first started blogging instead of makeup. It wasn’t until last year that trying REN really helped my skin and made my makeup look better. Great skincare is definitely the foundation to everything else looking good. Agree with you about rest, water, proper eating and smart sun care. Great post.

I’m so glad you agree, and thank you so much for the compliment, that’s really kind of you! Great skincare is definitely one of the key building blocks which is why I put it first, it’s amazing how big of a difference it makes!
Some great tips you have here. I totally agree on the no smoking and drinking, although I drink alcohol on the weekends sometimes. I feel that it dries out my skin definitely, and I have to follow up with lots of water. Loved the post, it’s perfect!

You and your bobble 😉 I have to say it’s hard in England to find places to fill up your water bottle. That was kind of frustrating for me :/
Author
Really? What kind of places do you have over there? I always just get water in a restaurant and pour it in the bottle 🙂
We have water fountains everywhere! Some of them even have little things that pop up especially to fill a water bottle so it’s completely full.
Author
Now that’s cool! I’ve seen some around, or you can fill up in bathrooms in places (not the cheap, horrible ones), but regular fountains would be good!
Great post Lorna, you really do look amazing, and so does your mum 🙂

Thank you 🙂 I’m glad you think so!
Great post, my skin (especially my face) is sacred. I can’t go an entire day without my skin care routine. The amount of time I spend every morning and night on my skin is almost embarrassingly long, haha! 🙂

This is really helpful advice Lorna, and I like the emphasis you’ve placed on health and wellbeing first. You’re so right, using a separate eye cream is an absolute must, and one which contains SPF is the first line of defence against ageing. I also recommend a daily lip balm with SPF, such as the Malibu range (SPF 30), or Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Lip Balm (SPF 15).
I admire the fact that you’ve never smoked or drank alcohol, or taken drugs. It makes total sense to avoid these things, as part of a healthy lifestyle. I’ve lived by the same rules, and as I’ve never experienced these things, they have no appeal for me. Like you, I’m also particular about sun protection when I’m out and about, and never sunbathe. The only thing I find it really hard to stick to out of all your rules, is getting enough sleep every night, as I’ve never had a proper bedtime!
Your Mum is totally adorable and whatever she’s doing has clearly been working!
Lots of love Saba xx

I’m so glad that you’re the same, Saba! That makes 3 of us here now that live that way, since Steven said he does too. It’s not as rare as I once thought! Sleeping rules are very hard though, especially sometimes when you just can’t sleep. I’ve been in that position so many times, it’s a nightmare! I forgot to mention the lip balm with SPF, I have one of those too!
You’re right Lorna, we’re obviously in great company, haha! Having a clean lifestyle really does make a difference though. I’m glad to hear you’re a fan of lip balms with SPF in them too. I found a three-pack of the Malibu range in my local T.K Maxx, and they come in various fruity flavours which have a lovely texture, and don’t feel like sunscreen at all! The vanilla one is the absolute nicest.
There’s nothing worse than getting to bed on time, only to have a restless night! No wonder you’ve been having visions of the Silent Night Hippo! Sorry but I couldn’t resist bringing that up again, haha! xx
Author
LOL! That definitely made me laugh, ha ha. You’re right, that little duck friend of his must have been visiting me! I think the lip balm I have is the Nivea one, it’s really good! xx.
Ooh I haven’t tried Nivea lip balm, as I was a Palmer’s devotee for so many years, before recently discovering the Malibu range of lip balms! Haha! It sounds like you have very eventful dreams Lorna! Much more interesting than my mundane ones! xx
i cannot go outside without sunscreen..water works wonder really..
