I figured since April is on its way and it brings April Showers (although March is more filled with rain everyday so far!), it would be good to do a blog post on some fashionable and essential rainwear for the season. Living in England means I pretty much have to live in waterproof clothing and take an umbrella with me all of the time, unless it’s the middle of summer (but even that’s risky to go sans an umbrella) so I need multiple choices and options that look nice.
I never used to think that waterproof clothing was pretty or fashionable though, but all of that has changed over the last couple of years and there’s some of the cutest pieces around, which is why I have only recently gotten lots of it! Wellies come in an array of colours and styles, rain macs are printed and brightly coloured, and umbrellas are really pretty to look at. With all of that in mind, I am sharing with you 15 of my favourite rainwear items out at the moment which are fashionable, fun, and trendy at the same time. I know, who would have thought it, right?
Joules Coast Waterproof Jacket in Berry
This raincoat is one of my favourites at the moment! I bought it in Joules a while ago and I wore it a couple of days ago. The way the water just stays in globs on the fabric is incredible! You can roll balls of water around on it, then it drops off and there’s no trace of any water left behind! I’m fascinated by that. It actually comes in so many colours – red, blue, green, yellow, orange etc, but I loved this berry shade as the blue and white striped lining complemented it perfectly. It does run a bit small, so I had to size up to a UK 10 in it and I usually vary between a 6-8. It’s definitely worth the price though!
Hunter Refined Chelsea Rain Boots in Slate Grey
Now these are a newly acquired purchase of mine too! You all know how much I love wellies (I now have 13 pairs in all different colours and styles!) but wearing the tall ones can be a bit cumbersome at times. Just for running quick errands and going to peoples houses I definitely needed something smaller and these Chelsea boots are it. I saw them originally on the Hunter website and they looked black and grey, but then I saw them on Tower London and they were actually grey all over. I wasn’t sure which was correct and the lovely lady at Tower London helped me and even took an iPhone photo for me to show me they were grey, which was what I wanted.
Unlike Hunter’s customer service, which leaves much to be desired, I was very happy with Tower London and I can’t recommend them enough for a personal approach. I can’t stand that Hunter treats you like a case rather than a person and they are never helpful or make you feel important, which is a shame since I like their wellies, but I thought it’s worth mentioning in case you ever have to reach out to Hunter. It’s better to buy from somewhere else. I never like to be negative, but they have disappointed me on numerous occasions with their policies and evasiveness. With that being said, these boots are amazing though and I recommend them so much! And yes, I will be doing an outfit with them next month! They’re perfect with all of my jeans.
Lulu Guinness London Print Bird Cage Umbrella
Does this need any explanation? Umbrellas are an absolute must have and this one is so cute! A London print with a great quality umbrella from Lulu Guinness… Say no more!
Hunter Original Tall Gloss Wellies in Pale Mint
These caught my eye as they are a brand new colour for the SS17 collection. I saw them in the shop the other day and thought they were so pretty. It’s like a pastel baby blue more so than a mint, but the Hunter photos are never that great as they are often inaccurate. These are cute though and would liven up your jeans and daily outfits!
Hunter Original Vinyl Jacket in Fuchsia
This raincoat looked absolutely stunning! It’s a light weight vinyl which is great for packing into your bags or wearing to festivals, but the colour is incredible. I love anything in a bright pink like this. I’d love to own this one, that’s for sure!
Joules Molly Wellies in Navy Spot
Joules is a brand that never gets enough credit in my opinion for their rainwear and they have some amazing pieces. Not only do they have great raincoats, but they have wellies too at such a reasonable price. They’re really affordable and full of fun prints and designs. I love their dog prints, or the flowers, but I think the blue and pink polka dots is so versatile.
Lulu Guinness Red Cut Out Lips Kensington Umbrella
This umbrella is just so nice. I love the red shade with the little clear lips windows on it. I don’t think it needs much description as the photo does the talking, but I love it.
Hunter Original Short Rain Boots in Yellow
A pair of yellow short wellies have been on my wish list for ages now, especially as they would match my yellow raincoat that I own, but I’ve never purchased them yet. If you love bright colours, yellow really brightens up your day and it’s such a talking point. Fashionable and practical.
Joules Go Lightly Packaway Parka in Pool Blue Spot
Again, when I was in Joules, I saw this raincoat and fell completely in love with it. The colour is absolutely insane in person, it’s like a sapphire blue and it’s like raindrops, so it reminded me so much of my blog name – Raindrops of Sapphire. I had to try it on, and as it packs away into a tiny pocket pouch, I thought it would be perfect for travelling, especially on holiday. It’s affordable too! It runs bigger than the other one I have and I got my size UK 6. Honestly if you only got one rain coat, this one is ideal. I LOVE it.
Lulu Guinness Love Birds Birdcage Umbrella
I am a fan of Lulu Guinness and her umbrellas, especially the clear birdcage ones and this one has love birds on it with a cage design, how adorable is that?
Hunter Original Tall Adjustable Rain Boots in Bright Violet
These wellies remind me a lot of my Loganberry wellies, but they’re adjustable so if you have bigger calves, these would be ideal. The colour though, wow! It looks almost edible!
As far as raincoats go, I have about 6 of them, but one that’s remained a constant favourite in my collection is this yellow one from Petit Bateau. I got it ages ago, maybe almost 2 years ago, and it’s been one of my go to coats all the time. It’s comfortable, warm, bright yellow, lined, and just really easy to wear. It’s one of those rain coats you just grab and go and throw it on, but it looks really good and stylish. I’ve received so many compliments each time I’ve worn it, so if you can afford a bit more of an expensive one, this one should be the one you go for, all the way!
Hunter Original Mustache Bubble Umbrella in Bright Pink
If you planned on getting the pink Hunter rain coat, you can get the matching umbrella. I have one of these umbrellas in coral to match my wellies (as you can see in the first photo above) and the quality of the umbrellas is really good. They come in numerous colours and they’re really sturdy.
Joules Rockingham Chelsea Boots in Black Beau Bloom
Chelsea rain boots are ideal for the warmer weather since you wont be trailing through mud and fields, you’re just avoiding the showers on a warm day. If the Hunter ones above are too pricey, these Joules ones are a great alternative. They’re much more affordable and cute with the print too!
And finally… An item I never leave the house without – my handbag raincoat. If you love designer bags like I do and don’t want them to get ruined when you get caught in a downpour, get one of these. They come in 3 sizes and they secure with Velcro, so the handles or strap can still show. It covers over the entire bag (if you have the right size) and protects it from the rain entirely. If you spend a lot of money on your bag and it could get ruined, you should give it a raincoat too. I love mine and I bought it about two years ago.
– I would love to know what your rainwear essentials are! Do you love to wear rain coats and wellies together or are you more of an umbrella and Chelsea boot person? Just remember that waterproof clothing doesn’t have to be boring and dark, it can be fashionable and fun. I love wearing mine, which is a good thing since I’m constantly living in it at the moment! Happy April Showers!

There are so many adorable rainwear choices… I love all the umbrellas … the color choices for wellies are the best and wow to a raincover for your handbag. We get a fair amount of rain here but not daily thank goodness.
I always encouraged both of my girls to jump and splash in the puddles… I think you need to have fun on dreary days xox ♡

These items are all so fabulous Lorna! You’ve certainly made me revise my opinion of practical rainwear essentials! I adore the Lulu Guinness umbrellas. The one with the London skyline is amazing, and I love the red one too with the clear lips. You look so sweet in your yellow raincoat! It’s fantastic that you have so many fashionable options for rainy days. Rain may be an inescapable fact of life, but wearing something fun and colourful always has an uplifting effect!
Lots of love Saba xx

It definitely makes me feel a lot safer and happier when it rains if I have my colourful clothes on which keep me dry. Got to make the most of it! Never let it get you down. I love the London umbrella too, it’s so cool!
That’s a good attitude to have Lorna! Being well-prepared is half the battle! Oh I agree, Lulu Guinness accessories are always so whimsical and playful! xx

They truly are!
Oh that first pink raincoat is lovely! 😀 I really don’t have much wet weather gear, and the only umbrella I have is a freebie one haha. It’s usually stashed in the boot of the car. Our wettest period is over summer so it’s hard to dress appropriately as it’s so hot and humid before the storms roll in. When we have a few days of non-stop rain though I always think I should get some cute rainboots. I like those short grey ones! 🙂
Hope you are having a great week! Happy International Women’s Day! 🙂

Hi Lorna. What a cool post, all about rain and rain boots. I love it. Such cool wellies and love jackets too.
I read that you have so many wellies, maybe you should do a photo with you wearing all the different wellies or do a wellies line up, haha.
Author
I think I have done a photo shoot with every single pair I own, except my tartan navy ones. I’ve got no space to line them all up at once though, ha ha.
Perfect waterproof clothing! Especially I like your stylish umbrellas and rain boots.

Finally made it to your blog, sweetheart. It’s been way too long and it’s inexcusable. But you now know that I was in a funk for a while now. Whew, so good to be able to share that and know that those I care about can relate <3
LOVE this post and the gorgeous and bright selection of rainy day essentials. I remember growing up and all rainwear you could get used to be black and well, of all gloomy colours.
Joules, Hunter and Lulu Guinness are absolutely killing it with the pop of colour!!! That's exactly what we need on a rainy day, One look and you just want to smile 🙂
Hope you're feeling much better, sweetie. I will get back to you ASAP. Time to get back to work, right? 😉

Those umbrellas are so fun. They are a prefect alternative to those boring black ones most of us carry around.

Great selection! I especially like the cheerfulness of those yellow wellies (which is a nice tongue twister…). 😀
I see I am very poorly prepared for wet weather. I don’t even own a single umbrella. LOL
Author
Oh wow, you need to change that! Get a green one! 😀
Hmmm, I like the concept of a green umbrella. 🙂 But I just like to be carrying as little as possible when I go out. 🙂
Author
Yeah, I understand that. A hat with one attached to it it is then! Ha ha!
Lovely selection and your outfit is very cute 🙂

Hi Lorna, thank you for celebrating the rain by dressing stylishly. My friend and I design fashion umbrellas and we absolutely love brollies! Our label is called Mary Sam’s. We think umbrellas make the perfect fashion accessory and represent a statement piece! Our brollies are available in the U.K. at fashion boutique Wolf & Badger: please have a look: https://www.wolfandbadger.com/us/tragedy-spectacle/
Thank you and stay dry 🙂

Very nice 🙂
When it is really wet I find that rain trousers are the best for walking to work, but none too stylish. How about meeting the challenge of solving that one

It’s a good point. I know the vinyl or PVC looking skinny jeans are very popular at the moment, so I would assume those are also waterproof as well!
Sadly not – if only they would seal the seams……;.and to sweaty as well.

Then I have no idea, ha ha.
