Gucci Marmont Velvet Belt Bag Review

My Gucci GG Marmont Velvet Belt Bag Review

I am SO excited to be sharing this new review with you! Honestly, so excited! You probably all know that I have a little Gucci obsession! I’ve got two pairs of the Princetown loafers (brown and embroidered black), two belts (tan and black), and a Gucci Dionysus Bag, but my latest acquisition is the new Gucci GG Marmont Velvet Belt Bag! I had been eyeing up this bag for months, mostly in the magenta colour, but after saving up for it and debating with myself for a couple of weeks about what colour would actually be better for me, I opted for black as it’s the most versatile – I didn’t think the magenta would go with everything, especially not burgundy, and we all know I live in that colour in Autumn/Winter. I wasn’t sure how it was going to be in person, but the moment I got it out of the box and tried it on, I was completely smitten and in love. Not only does it come in the prettiest box and dust bag (which always excites me – see below), but the belt bag itself is incredible, which is why I’m sharing this review. So, check out the scores below and lets get to it!

The Design

I know not a lot needs to be said about the design as you can see from the photos, and I’m sure most of you have seen this bag on other fashion bloggers too, but I will share a bit about it. It’s an oval/oblong shaped clutch bag which attaches to a belt, creating the belt bag. This comes in both a leather and a velvet fabric, in multiple colours. The leather comes in red, black, and baby pink, while the velvet has a little more choice and comes in black, magenta, turquoise, pink and sapphire blue. All of them have a gold tone hardware and all of them are the exact same shape and size as this one. Gucci definitely paid homage to the retro trend with this belt bat, didn’t they? Velvet is ideal for the cooler weather and so are the jewel tone shades that it comes in. So, that’s the design, and I will speak more in depth about the details on the bag just below as well.

The Belt Size

Just like the Gucci belts and how they come in different sizes, this belt bag does exactly the same. It’s available in sizes 65, 75, 85, 95 and 105, so it suits almost every person. If you’re unsure on what size you need to take, you can check out my Gucci GG Belt Review as I gave all the sizing information there. Seeing as I am a size 85 in their normal belts, I knew I would be size 85 in this belt bag, and I was correct. It comes with many more holes than the normal belts that have 5 though. This one has around 9 holes, so you can choose to wear it up around your waist, or low down on your hips since you can adjust it. It’s fantastic! So, it doesn’t matter if you’re unsure on the exact size, it has so many holes you can’t really make a huge mistake from being off by a few centimeters.

The Bag Size

The Marmont bag itself is actually quite petite, since it doubles up as a clutch too. The width is just slightly over 7 inches (18.5cm), the height is around 4.3 inches (11cm), and the depth is just over 1.5 inches (4.5cm), making it a great little bag to sit around your middle as it’s not too overwhelming or in the way. It holds my iPhone 7 easily, along with lip balm, lip stick, cards, money etc, so it’s ideal for carrying all of your essentials, as you can see from the photo of it above on myself. I’m a size UK 8-10, or wear size 27 in premium jeans, and I’m 5ft 4, so I hope that gives you an idea of the actual size of the bag on me. I will be posting a full outfit very soon for more reference.

The Velvet & Fabric

Now as you can tell, I opted for the Gucci Marmont Belt Bag in velvet. They do have leather available as well, but velvet is one of the fabrics that I absolutely adore, so it was a certainty that I would choose it. So the entire bag is made of velvet on the outside, the pink lining is made of silk, and the actual belt is made of leather (as well as the little loops on the back of the bag), so it’s a good combination. It says made in Italy on the actual bag and on the belt, so the whole thing has Italy as the country of origin, just as you’d expect from Gucci.

As you know, I already own this Chanel Small Boy Bag in Velvet and I literally have to be SO careful with it because it’s one of the most delicate velvet’s I have ever come across. It gets marked and damaged so easily, which was a concern for this bag too as I was worried it would be similar since it’s velvet from a designer label. As the price was much, much cheaper than my Chanel though, I figured the velvet should be more robust and opted to try it. I was correct. It’s not a delicate and easily damaged velvet, it’s much more durable, which is perfect for a belt bag as it’s going to get knocked a lot from wear. So I’m happy that it’s a tougher, sturdier fabric!

The Versatility

I was of course attracted to this Gucci Marmont because I have a fascination with belt bags (or as we call them in the UK ‘bum bags’ or in the US ‘fanny packs’). I always adore the idea of being completely hands free and your items being secure around your middle, so they can’t be stolen. That appeals to me greatly, and I don’t know if it’s because I’m older and love 80’s/90’s fashion, but I think they look so cool too! I get excited to wear it!

There’s so much versatility with this particular bag though! It’s actually 3 items in 1! Yep, you can remove the belt entirely as it only threads through the leather loops on the back of the bag, so you have a plain black belt to wear, and then have a clutch for a night out, or you can put them both together and have the belt bag. So for the price (I will come to that in a moment), it’s definitely a good buy to have 3 things in 1! Who doesn’t love that?! Plus, not only can you wear it anywhere on your middle, but I have seen some people wear it across their chests too, in a cross-body style motion. I did attempt this, but due to having a larger chest, it didn’t work, ha ha.

The Details

There are a few really cute details on this bag actually that I adore! Not only does it have the antiqued gold-tone metal GG on the front plaque (similar to the GG belt, but smaller), it also features a sewn in heart on the back (see photos). This gets covered by the belt, but when worn as a single clutch, you can see it perfectly. I love little things like that as it makes me love the bag even more.

The zipper puller has a leather tab on it. All of the hardware is gold, including on the belt. The silk lining is a pretty baby pink colour which is very representative of the love on the back. It has the zig zag stitching quilted all over the velvet (called Chevron stitching) to add a little more uniqueness to it, but from afar that’s not really visible. It only has one main compartment inside though, as it’s not very big, but nothing will get lost, it’s too small for that.

The Price

Now I actually purchased the Belt Bag last month before the price increase, so I was lucky. I got it for around £650 after saving up for it. I wasn’t aware when the price increase was happening (it’s twice a year, usually September and March) and then when I checked back the week after, I was shocked to find it’s now £715 everywhere. So unfortunately, the bag is now £65 more than what I purchased it for, but that in my opinion is still a really good price for what you’re getting.

If you’re like me and you’re used to seeing the prices of Chanel, Celine, Louis Vuitton etc, then you will think that this is actually acceptable for a designer bag. I mean the simple Gucci shoes are around the £500 mark and their t-shirts are around £300, so when you compare it to their other pieces, this works out cheap for the brand. So for the quality, the versatility, and the design, I think it’s definitely a worthy investment. It’s considered cheap for a designer bag (I’m not saying cheap in general as I’m well aware that it’s not and I am by no means full of money) so if you are saving up for one or are in the market for a new bag, but don’t want to pay the bigger prices, I cannot recommend this one to you enough! Seriously! It’s worth the money and so cute!

Overall Opinion

I’m pretty sure you can tell my opinion of this bag is one of pure love! I’m so excited, there’s literally no negative points at all to make. I usually have some bad points in my reviews, but I love everything! The size, the design, the velvet, the wearability and the versatility, the pink lining, all the little details… It’s amazing! Plus, the price was one I could save up for and pay.

The box and dust bag, as you can see, are absolutely stunning too. I love that Gucci pay so much attention to their packaging as well, it just makes purchases that extra bit special! I got mine from Matches, so you can definitely guarantee it comes in the Gucci box. I wasn’t sure on other sites, but hopefully it does too! I know the leather ones don’t come with this box and dust bag, it’s just velvet. Knowing this one came in its box and had free shipping at the time, that’s what swayed me to use Matches as it’s a great company in the UK.

I would say maybe if I could say one negative, the leather loops on the back of the bag that you thread the belt into are quite tight, so it can mark the velvet ever so slightly, but I think they need to be tight to keep the bag secure, so I feel like it’s unavoidable. Anyway, I definitely give it 10/10 or more if I could! What do you think? I would love your opinions on the Gucci Marmont Velvet Belt Bag!

You can watch someone else’s un-boxing video just below of the leather one too to see how it comes! It looks like the leather comes in the original box and dust bag though, where as my velvet one comes with the printed florals.

The first thing I thought was “What a nifty little fanny pack”; the second thing I thought was “Can you even say that in front of an English woman?”

Still, it’s a swell bag. Or clutch, if need be.

LOL! Charles, you do make me laugh! If the English woman in question knows that a fanny in the US means a bum, sure. However most of us don’t and think you mean our front parts, so be careful! Ha ha.

Lorna, this is a sweet little bag, it’s a great way to have your hands free and still be able to carry your much needed items around… this is so much more stylish than the fanny packs I used to wear in the 80’s… Of course it’s Gucci… so of course it is much more beautiful xox

You are right, this belt bag is really cute. The velvet makes the double G looks attractive 🙂 I recently purchased the Marmont bag and belt in leather and yes Gucci makes girls addicted to it. Great review dear! Love it too!

Hi Lorna! This bag is so beautiful and I love all the details, especially the cute heart stitched on the back of the bag. It’s so chic and will look lovely worn as a clutch bag, as well as a belt bag. I’m excited to see how you style the bag in your outfit posts!
