Organising your wardrobe for summer

Organising your wardrobe for summer

With summer fast approaching, it’s time to organise your life to ensure you’re ready for light nights, sunny days and fun garden parties with friends and family members. There are plenty of summer preparation tasks to start now, but none are quite as important as preparing your wardrobe.

Say goodbye to thick knitwear and large coats, and say hello to summer dresses and shorts. You won’t want your wardrobe to be filled with your winter clothes when summer rolls around as this will make it harder to piece together an outfit, unless you have a huge walk in wardrobe that accommodates all seasons. That’s why I’ve put together this post to help you can organise your wardrobe for summer.

Doing this should put your favourite summer pieces in the limelight, making them easy to find and keeping them in pristine condition. So, if your wardrobe’s looking a little winter-heavy, my guide below can help. Continue reading to learn more and take control of your wardrobe once again.

Start with a clear-out

Sorting through your old clothes is the first step to an organised wardrobe. This is a great way to reduce clutter, which can boost mental health. Plus, removing clothes you don’t want should make it easier to find a space for everything you want to keep.

The clothes you don’t want can be given to charity or you could try to sell them on apps like Vinted. If you opt for the latter, you can make some extra cash to buy new summer clothes for the upcoming season. I always do this! I’m always re-selling clothes that I can get money for, and donating the ones that I can’t.

Clearing out clothes that you don’t really wear anymore or that don’t fit you is a huge important step in organising your wardrobe, so that you have space for everything you love and aren’t overwhelmed.

Give it a deep clean

The next step is cleaning the wardrobe itself. If you want the best for your clothes, a clean environment is key. Take all of your items out and remove any dust to begin with, then finish by wiping all surfaces down with a reliable multisurface cleaner.

You’d be surprised at how much dust and fluff and debri builds up inside the wardrobe, so it’s important to keep it clean and fresh! Especially if you have an open unit system, those attract dust a lot easier.

Organise by function & colour

Organising by function is one of the most effective techniques. This makes it easier to find your clothes and put together new outfits when you’re deciding what to wear. I recommend organising your clothes into the categories they belong, and then colour co-ordinating them.

Examples of this would be putting all of your jackets in one place, organised with a nice colour co-ordinated palette. The same goes for your skirts and tops etc! Keep them in their own sections and lined up by colour, so this really helps you when putting an outfit together.

Separate the seasons

Keeping your winter and summer clothes separate is another way to create space. As mentioned above, switching them out is ideal. You can store your winter clothes under the bed or in your loft when you don’t need them. This should free up plenty of space for your summer clothes, but you’ll know where to find your favourite sweatshirts if any cold summer days come around. This is really helpful if you don’t really have the space in your wardrobe to seperate the entire thing into seasons.

Need an upgrade?

If you’ve made these changes but still find yourself struggling to find your cherished items, it may be time for a wardrobe upgrade. Consider a fitted wardrobe that seamlessly slots into your bedroom design and choose features that can get the most out of your space.

I did this a while ago, with an amazing custom built system that I put together myself, and I love it! I have drawer space for everything, different length hanging rails, shelving units etc. It’s one of the best things that you can do if you’re a fashion lover like myself! The way you store your clothes can be art too!
