Why Other People’s Opinions On Your Style Don’t Matter

Why Other People’s Opinions On Your Style Don’t Matter

Is it better to be part of the crowd or to do your own thing? In reality, it’s going to depend on you – do you want to go unnoticed or do you want to be authentic and happy? If it’s the latter, there’s one big obstacle standing in your way – other people’s opinions.

Even if you don’t think that’s something you ever really think about or give much credence to, the fact is that it’s often surprising how much weight we give to those opinions, even though, when you think about it, they don’t make all that much difference in the grand scheme of things.

While I’m on that subject, let’s look more closely at why other people’s opinions don’t matter when it comes to your style – once you know all this, you’ll be much more willing to be yourself. I’ve embraced my own style so much over the past however many years. I used to think it was important to follow the trends and wear things I didn’t necessarily feel comfortable in, to fit in, but I have learned that it’s simply not true.

What I’m comfortable in and what I think I look best in is what makes my personality show through! When I see someone out in an outfit with a huge smile on their face and they’re being unique, being themselves, that radiates to everyone else and I can appreciate it. So if you love something and someone else doesn’t, it really doesn’t mean anything. What matters is that you love it, after all, you’re the one wearing it!

Authenticity

So what do you need to think about first? One good first step (as briefly mentioned above) is to remember that your style is an extension of who you are, and it essentially tells a story about your personality and your tastes. So it makes sense that when you dress to please others or conform to what society expects (whatever that might be – it changes all the time!), you’re not being yourself – you’re not being authentic.

So the next question you might have is why is being authentic so important? There are a few reasons, but one is that it means you attract the right people to you and you make friends with people who know the real you and share your interests, for example. That’s why wearing what makes you happy and comfortable is so good, not to mention the fact that it makes you a lot more self-confident, and that’s so much more attractive than any ‘trendy’ outfit ever could be!

Ever-Changing Trends

You’ll have noticed how often fashion styles change – just look back at what people were wearing a few years ago and what they’re wearing now. And if things changed in the past, they’ll change again in the future; something new is always around the corner when it comes to style and fashion. It’s how the industry makes money.

So if you’re always looking for approval from others by following every trend there is, you’ll never really be yourself, and you’ll never really be comfortable. If, on the other hand, you just stick with the style you like best and that makes you feel good, you’ll never have to worry about the changing trends and you’ll actually come up with a timeless style that you love – as a bonus, that’s going to save you money as well because you don’t have to keep buying new clothes.

Of course you can incorporate some trend items if they spark joy inside of you and resonate with you, we’re not totally ruling out trends here, but make them fit into your own personal style!

Better Mental Health

If you’re constantly worrying about what other people think about you, you’re going to end up feeling anxious and stressed, and that’s exhausting, not to mention the fact that it can have some big impacts on the rest of your life too.

When you focus instead on what makes you happy, whether that’s a specific style of clothing, body modifications like a nipple piercing, or accessories you love, for example, you’ll be so much freer and happier, and your mental health will benefit as a result.

Trust me when I say that nobody is actually noticing your ‘flaws’ or focusing on what you’re worried about, as that’s in your own head. Everyone else is usually wrapped up in their own worries and thoughts that they don’t notice, or they don’t care.

That’s something I learned a while ago from having acne. I used to be terrified of going out without make-up and I would try to hide my face, but the only energy I was giving off was shy and insecure, not welcoming, when in actual fact, nobody cared about the acne. It’s the same thing with clothing! Wear what is truly you and you will have a huge weight off of your shoulders!

So true… I’ve never deliberately tried to fit in with what’s in, though realistically what’s in fashion makes up the bulk of what’s available in the shops. I still happily wear some things I’ve had for 5, 10, even 20 years in a couple of cases.

I hope you remember me… Sorry I’ve not been by your site in an eternity. Things got really bad for me over the last few years with my mental health… I went through a lot. I’m OK now and I have just started a new job this last week (with a well known clothing retailer store, as it happens). Anyway, I’ll be about again.

    Best wishes,
    Steven

Hi Steven! That’s so funny! I was thinking about you a couple of weeks ago and wondering what you were up to as I hadn’t heard from you in a very long time. It’s lovely to see you commenting again! I’m sorry to hear things were really bad for you, but very happy that you’re on the mend ans things are better now. What’s the new job?

Thanks for your comments =) I read & reply every one =)
